Championing Better Patient Care Through Clinical Pharmacy and Nutrition Support
WASPEN is pleased to spotlight Dr. Ejiro Akpowwovwo, a consultant clinical pharmacist whose dedication to improving patient care has contributed significantly to the advancement of specialized nutrition support in West Africa.
Dr. Akpowwovwo holds a Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) degree and a Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree from the University of Benin. He is also a Fellow of the West African Postgraduate College of Pharmacists (WAPCP).
With more than 11 years of clinical practice experience, Dr. Akpowwovwo has developed extensive expertise in hospital pharmacy practice, while also providing consultancy services within community practice settings.
A Passion for Clinical Excellence and Lifelong Learning
Driven by a commitment to improving healthcare outcomes, Dr. Akpowwovwo has participated in several advanced professional training programs, including:
- The 1st and 2nd International Pharmacotherapy Training in Nigeria, led by Dr. Teresa Pounds and her team.
- Vascular Access Training conducted by Dr. Magdalene Oke.
- Drug Information Training conducted by Dr. Ashish Alvani.
These experiences strengthened his interest in specialized areas of patient care, particularly nutrition support.
Advancing Nutrition Support Services at DELSUTH
Following his specialized training, Dr. Akpowwovwo developed a strong interest in clinical nutrition and became one of the nutrition support pharmacists at Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DELSUTH).
In this role, he contributes to the development and delivery of nutrition support services while promoting multidisciplinary collaboration among healthcare professionals.
His additional professional responsibilities include:
- Assistant Clinical Training Coordinator within the pharmacy department.
- Founder of the Drug Information and Pharmacovigilance Center.
- Member of the hospital Research and Ethics Committee.
- Contributor to clinical research initiatives, with several published studies and ongoing research involving Total Parenteral Nutrition (TPN).
- Supply chain specialist.
- Volunteer trainer for the USAID Presidential Malaria Initiative program.
Supporting the Vision of WASPEN
Dr. Akpowwovwo remains committed to ensuring that specialized nutrition support becomes accessible to patients throughout the West African sub-region.
Through his collaboration with WASPEN Coordinator Dr. Teresa Pounds and other members of the organization, he continues to support efforts aimed at:
- Increasing awareness of malnutrition management.
- Expanding access to specialized nutritional therapies.
- Strengthening healthcare professional training.
- Promoting evidence-based nutrition support practices.
His dedication represents the growing commitment among healthcare professionals in West Africa to improve nutritional care and patient outcomes.
